Don’t worry about counting your calories at your summer party

You won't pack on the pounds with these tasty drinks.

Sangria is a perfect summertime cocktail - not only is it refreshing, delicious and oh-so-sip-able, it can also help you stretch that bottle of wine to serve twice as many guests. Traditional sangria recipes can, however, be full of sugar and sweet liqueur, which can make for a glass full of calories—not something we want during the bikini-baring months of summer.

We knew there had to be a better way. So, after extensive recipe testing and refinement in the Drync offices, we developed 3 delicious low-calorie sangria recipes. SOMEONE had to do it!

Rules for Creating Your Own Low-Calorie Sangria Recipes

The key to making low-calorie sangria, is to keep alcohol and sugar content to a minimum. Stay away from big, rich wines and avoid using sugary fruits, like peaches and pineapples.

Another tip is to use lots of ice – not only will it keep your sangria refreshingly cold, it will water it down ever so slightly, reducing the number of calories per sip. Check out the Drync Low Cal Wine List for low-calorie wine recommendations of red, white and rosé.

And now, for three quick and easy low-calorie sangria recipes:

‘Light and Lovely’ Red Sangria
Want your sangria to be a rich red but a light sip? Using ingredients like orange juice and agave nectar will lighten the caloric load.

‘Whittle Me Down’ White Sangria
Refreshing and perfect for any summer barbecue, white sangria will be a delicious addition to your summer table and will allow you to still fit into your bikini.

‘Everything’s Coming Up’ Rosé Sangria

A rosé is the perfect summer sip. Combine that with a light lemonade and fresh fruit and suddenly you’ll have a crafty, delicious drink that won’t cost you too many calories.

So there you have it—a guilt-free way to have your cake and eat it too, or should we say “have your wine and drink it too?”

How Champagne Flew the Coupe

Every Valentine’s day, countless couples toast to their romances with glasses of champagne. There’s something about the ceremonial popping of the cork and the elegant, slender shape of this beverage’s iconic vessel that temporarily transforms you into one of society’s elite. The flute was first discovered by the English in 1750𠅊 definite upgrade from the metallic goblets used previously. But over the ages, it has competed with a stout, bowl-like drinking vessel as the champagne-drinking glassware of choice: the coupe. And once you hear the origin stories surrounding this voluptuous vessel, you might be convinced to pull out a pair of coupes for your Valentine’s champagne.

The most famous tale regarding the coupe glass dates back to the 1780s, not long after champagne was first popularized among the French royal court. Legend has it that Louis XVI commissioned a bowl-like porcelain dish called a jatte-téton to be modeled after his wife Marie Antoinette’s breast, complete with an evocative nipple at its base. The bowl was set in a three-footed pedestal and had to be lifted up and cradled in order to drink from it. But Brian Hart Hoffman, author of The Coupe: Celebrating Craft Cocktails and Vintage Collections, is quick to debunk the myth.

“There are many coupe-shaped glasses that predate Marie Antoinette so we know that the glass shape itself was not formed from her breast,” Hart Hoffman says. In fact, the feminine shape has appeared in drinking vessels as early as the 9th century in the form of a terracotta mastos cup used by the Greek. That, however, hasn’t stopped the breast-coupe association from persisting. Famously, Kate Moss and Claudia Schiffer have both lent their assets to inspire coupe glass designs.

While coupes and flutes have been used in Europe for centuries, the coupe took hold in the United States during the prohibition-era 1920s and s. Then, the glass served not only champagne but also refined cocktails. Its popularity ballooned as it became synonymous with Hollywood’s elite. “It was a period of time when a lot of actresses and celebrities were drinking champagne from coupe glasses,” Hart Hoffman explains. “It became a status symbol.”

While the coupe’s open shape might be a fashionable way to enjoy a bottle of bubbly, it unfortunately means all that hard-earned effervescence tends to dissipate quite quickly, leaving you with a stylish but flat coupe-full of fizzy wine if you sip too slowly. “The champagne-drinking coupe era came to a close in the s and s,” Hart Hoffman explains. “The champagne flute really became the main vessel that people were serving champagne in. I chalk it up to an increased return to the love of the effervescence of the champagne and retaining the bubbles in the glass.”

The flute’s narrow opening helps it keep more of that coveted carbonation in the beverage. A proper champagne flute will have an etched bead at its base where the effervescence should start, while the tall and slender shape heightens the visual appeal of the bubbles as they travel up the length of the glass. You’ll also experience an entertaining “nose tingle” as the bubbles pop at the top—something that you might miss if sipping from a coupe.

Hard Iced Tea Bar: 3 Recipes for Summer Sipping

Summer is the perfect time to whip up a batch of refreshing iced tea. And, if you’re brewing some for a party, why not spike it for a spin on the classic cocktail? We rounded up three of our favorite hard iced tea recipes and created a whole specialty bar around them! It’s a great idea for a Father’s Day get-together, or a coed baby shower. Whether you try our takes on the popular recipes or whip up the originals, everything you need to know for your next summer soiree is below.

We pre-mixed the drinks, poured them into fancy glass dispensers (a trick that makes self-service more appealing), and placed fresh garnishes (think mint sprigs, berries and limes) on the side. Serving drinks in mason jars with striped straws adds a touch of nostalgia, and having dishtowels on hand is a must for quick cleanup. Writing drink names on brown paper tags makes them more easily identifiable.

Blackberry-Bourbon Iced Tea:

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups fresh blackberries
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 4 tablespoons fresh mint sprigs, chopped (reserve some for garnish)
  • 12 black tea bags
  • 2 1/2 cups bourbon

Directions: In a large bowl, mash blackberries, chopped mint and sugar. Bring 1 1/2 quarts water to a boil in a medium saucepan, remove from heat and let tea bags steep for 5 minutes. Remove tea bags and pour the tea over the blackberries, mint and sugar mixture. Pour bourbon into the mixture, and let sit for at least 1 hour. Pour the mixture through a strainer into a drink dispenser, pressing on the solids. Cover and refrigerate until cold (at least 2 hours).

We placed a julep cup filled with fresh leaves of mint, a plate of blackberries and a mason jar of rock-candy sugar sticks on dishtowels for garnish.

Smokey Iced Tea and Whiskey Cooler:

Serves 12

Ingredients:

  • 4 1/2 cups brewed black tea, chilled
  • 1 1/2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 cups ginger liqueur
  • 1 1/2 cups whiskey
  • Dash Angostura bitters
  • 2 lemons for garnish

Directions: Fill drink dispenser 1/3 full with ice and combine tea, lemon, ginger liqueur, whisky and bitters. Stir well and garnish with lemon slices.

Rock-candy sugar sticks and lemon slices provide the perfect garnish for this tea.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups gin
  • 4 chamomile tea bags
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 4 12 ounce cans seltzer, chilled
  • 1 1/4 cups fresh lime juice (10-12 limes)
  • 2 limes, sliced for garnish

Directions: In a large bowl, combine the gin, tea bags and cloves and let sit for 2 to 4 hours. Fill drink dispenser 1/3 full with ice and strain mixture into it. Discard the tea bags and cloves. Add seltzer and lime juice.

A side of lime slices and rock-candy sugar sticks are the perfect garnish.

After several trips to Italy, Camille has pretty much decided that it’s her favorite place on earth—and we’d have to concur! And even though she has eaten her way through the scenic continent, freely enjoying pasta, fresh mozzarella, gelato, and wine—she came home feeling just as light as when she left Austin. So, this garlic shrimp spaghetti is an homage to those many light pasta dishes.

Chili Peppers 5 Ways

Cooking with fresh chili peppers adds big flavor (without calories) to all kinds of recipes – even dessert! Whether you’re a fan of mild peppers or four-alarm heat, we're breaking down the different types of these tiny spice powerhouses. Then, light a fire in your kitchen with five hot dishes.

The mildest of the bunch, you can use dark green poblanos in place of green bell peppers. They’re exceptional for sautéeing, roasting, stuffing, or making sauces.

Lesser-known Anaheim peppers have a little bit of heat and a sweet crunch. Roasting or grilling enhances their natural sugars. Follow these tips from the Food Network Kitchens for perfect roasted peppers, then make this salsa.

Slender and bright green, serrano chilies are a good multipurpose pepper. They register in the middle of the heat scale, and taste great raw in guacamole, salsa or in a spicy sauce for seafood.

With slightly less heat than serranos, jalapenos are well suited for pickling, roasting or baking. Remove the seeds and inner membranes to tone down the heat.

These tiny peppers pack a super hot punch. Thousands of times hotter than other chilies, proceed with caution when using these babies – they’ll knock your socks off. Pair them up with tangy pineapple for a cool (and hot) sorbet.

Recipe Summary

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons cream-style horseradish sauce
  • ⅓ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper
  • ⅓ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 1 ½ teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ⅓ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ⅛ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 large sweet onion
  • ¾ cup vegetable oil for frying

To make sauce: In a medium bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, 1/3 teaspoon paprika, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon oregano, a dash ground black pepper and cayenne pepper mix well. Keep sauce covered in refrigerator until needed.

To make the batter: In a medium bowl, beat egg and add milk. In a separate bowl, combine flour, salt, cayenne pepper, paprika, ground black pepper, oregano, thyme and cumin mix.

To slice onion: slice 1 inch off of the top and bottom of the onion and remove the papery skin. Use a thin knife to cut a 1 inch diameter core out of the middle of the onion. Now use a very sharp, large knife to slice the onion several times down the center to create 'petals': First slice through the center of the onion to about three-fourths of the way down. Turn the onion 90 degrees and slice it again in an X across the first slice. Keep slicing the sections in half, very carefully until the onion has been cut 16 times. Do not cut down to the bottom of the onion. (The last 8 slices will be difficult, be careful).

Spread the 'petals' of the onion apart. To help keep them separate you could plunge the onion into boiling water for 1 minute and then into cold water.

Dip the onion into the milk mixture and then coat it liberally with the flour mixture. Again separate the petals and sprinkle the dry coating between them. Once you're sure the onion is well-coated, dip it back into the wet mixture and into the dry coating again. This double-dipping ensures you have a well-coated onion because some of the coating will wash off when you fry the onion.

Heat oil in a deep fryer or deep pot to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Make sure you use enough oil to completely cover the onion when it fries.

Fry the onion right side up in the oil for 10 minutes or until it turns brown. When the onion has browned, remove it from the oil and let it drain on a rack or paper towels. Open the onion wider from the center so that you can put a small dish of the dipping sauce in the center.

We’ve given the iconic drink an Ontario spin by featuring our favourite Canadian sparkling rose wine. Henry of Pelham’s Cuvee Catherine is our favourite local bubbly, which pairs well with the wineries Vidal Cabernet Icewine.

If you’re not from Ontario, you can mimic this cocktail creation by using your favourite sparkling rose wine. Niagara region is the world’s most famous icewine producer, hosting an annual Icewine Festival each February in Niagara on the Lake. If you can’t seem to snatch a bottle feel free to substitute with a late harvest Riesling, sauternes like Château d’Yquem or a quality Port or Sherry.

Pour icewine into a champagne glass. Top with sparkling rose wine and garnish with a sliced strawberry.

Seedlip can be found in the best no or low alcoholic gay cocktails.

The Garden East Side

Looking for an alcohol free gay cocktail to celebrate Pride? Or perhaps you’re keen to pace yourself over a long day of celebrations and want to prepare a punch bowl filled with a low-alcohol mixed drink to ensure your guests stay hydrated?

England’s Seedlip is the world’s first non-alcoholic spirit brand. Over the last few years it has emerged as the market leader in the placebo cocktail game. Cocktails muddled with Seedlip are perfect for those who are not drinking alcohol for whatever reason, which in this day and age covers a myriad of moments: when you’re pregnant, on medication, acting as designated driver, at a work lunch, when you have an early start the next day or are simply celebrating sobriety.

I muddled The Garden East Side for my parents and didn’t tell them what was in it. They sipped slowly then voted vodka and gin but were later wildly surprised when they discovered the herbaceous cocktail was alcohol free!

The recipe below is our favourite non-alcoholic cocktail to enjoy at Pride but you can tweak it by adding 2 oz of dry sparkling wine to offer guests a low-alcohol option.

  • 2 oz Seedlip Garden 108
  • 1 oz fresh lime
  • 0.75 oz simple syrup
  • 8 mint leaves

Add Seedlip Garden 108, lime, simple syrup and mint leaves to a cocktail shaker and shake until fully combined. Strain into a chilled glass and garnish with a mint spring.

Pride Cocktails: Mix craft cider and Pimms in a punch bowl.

Pommies Pimms

Pimm’s is a brand of gin-based fruit cup, but is often considered a liqueur. It was first produced in 1823 by James Pimm and has been owned by Diageo since 1997. Its most popular product is Pimm’s No. 1 Cup.

Pimms No. 1 Cup has a dark-brown colour with a reddish tint, and tastes subtly of spice and citrus fruit. As a summer long drink, it is also commonly served as Pimm’s cocktail, a drink with “English-style” lemonade (7 Up or Sprite), as well as various chopped garnishes such as apples, cucumber, oranges, lemons, strawberry and mint.

Fermented apple fans will adore our refreshing Pommies Pimms, named after the popular Ontario craft cider producer. It’s the perfect Pride cocktail for those who enjoy herbaceous and spiced slurps.

  • 200ml Pimm’s No. 1
  • 600ml Pommies Cider
  • Mint sprigs
  • Sliced cucumber
  • Thinly sliced orange
  • Sliced strawberries

Add two handfuls of ice to a large punch bowl or glass jug. Fill with Pimms, cider, mint, cucumber, orange and strawberries. Mix with a punch or soup ladle and serve.

Best Gay Pride Cocktails: Niagara Red Wine Sangria.

Niagara Red Wine Sangria

Take a sensory trip to Spain to enjoy an ice cold sangria on the beaches of Malaga, Ibiza, Mallorca, Valencia, Barcelona or Sitges.

The popular Spanish punch traditionally consists of red wine, chopped fruit and other spirits such as brandy or schnapps. Classic Sangria recipes feature locally sourced ripe fruits such as peaches, nectarines, berries, apples, pears and citrus.

At one time Niagara region was Ontario’s top producer of peaches, cherries, pears and plums. Today, the stretch of land from Niagara Falls to Beamsville is best known for its award-winning Niagara wineries.

We’ve crafted a local Niagara sangria recipe featuring red wine from Ravine Vineyard and Peach Schnapps from Dillon’s Distillery.

  • 750 ml Ravine Sand & Gravel Redcoat
  • 4 oz Dillon’s Peach Schnapps
  • 4 oz Brandy
  • 5 freshly squeezed oranges
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 chopped apple

New Zealand’s Kim Crawford Rose has been shaken with a homemade lavender lemonade that will leave your pretty cheeks puckering for days. We suggest sourcing your edible lavender from a local producer in Norfolk County.

In a 16 oz glass, combine rosé, lavender lemonade and sparkling water over ice.

Bubly Paloma

Tequila lovers looking for gay cocktails at Pride with a tart grapefruit vibe will find happiness with the Bubly Paloma.

Pride Cocktails: Muddle white wine with mint and lime for this take on the mojito.

White Wine Mojito

Mojito fans who also like white wine will enjoy this new take on the classic Cuban cocktail.

If you’re entertaining guests at a petite Pride party be sure to prepare the mixed drink just before serving to ensure the fresh mint doesn’t discolour.

  • 750 ml bottle White Wine (we used Inniskillin’s Pinot Gris)
  • 2 cups Italian Sparkling Lemonade
  • 3 limes freshly juiced
  • 1 cup fresh mint

Mix the wine, sparkling lemonade and lime juice in a large pitcher. Moments before serving add mint. Garnish glass with slice of lime and sprig of mint.

Coconut Prickly Pear Margarita

Eau Claire Distillery is a popular Alberta craft distillery located a short drive south of Calgary.

The distillery’s most unique bottle is the Prickly Pear EquineOx, an Alberta barley-based flavoured vodka, highlighting the taste of Prickly Pear Cactus and citrus.

Fix yourself a Coconut Prickly Pear Margarita by muddling Equineox, Cointreau, coconut milk and simple syrup. The boozy beverage also works well as a blended ice drink so feel free to blitz with a few handfuls of ice for a smooth adult slushy.

If you don’t have access to Prickly Pear EquineOx, you can substitute your favourite vodka or gin.

Add Equineox, Cointreau, coconut milk and simple syrup into a cocktail shake and pour over ice. Serve with a slice of kiwi.

  • 2oz Wayne Gretzky Ice Cask Whisky
  • 1 oz Tawse Vermouth
  • 2 dashes Tawse Lemon Bitters

Add whisky, vermouth and bitters to an ice-filled cocktail shaker and mix well. Serve in a rocks glass with a lemon slice and Maraschino cherry.

Make your Pride cocktail morning moment super gay by pairing with cute, freshly baked muffins such as Banana Oat Chocolate Chips Muffins, Lemon Blueberry Muffins or Cheddar Apple Muffins.
